Do Business Managers and IT Managers Always Have the Same Objectives?


Do business managers and IT managers always have the same objectives? Ideally, they do. However, many organizations do not have the same goals. In many cases, the two groups are unaware of each other’s expertise.

The following examples will illustrate why business and IT teams should work closely together. For example, consider the case of the semiconductor company Intel. The manufacturing managers were responding to a directive from the finance department, thereby hindering the development of new products.

Setting appropriate standards for performance is a common problem for business and IT managers. Leaders can announce new strategic direction, but they must ensure that the new strategy is aligned with the new objectives. While a good relationship between a business manager and an IT manager would involve mutual respect and understanding, many companies don’t have such an ideal relationship. In addition, some companies have boards of directors that are controlled by the managers, and vice versa.

Whether a manager has a different objective than their subordinates, the two types of managers must have the same goals.


While top management is responsible for the direction of a company, both IT managers and business managers must share a common vision. This is a critical element of leadership. This process is crucial to align top-down and bottom-up processes, and should be coordinated and communicated. Despite differences, the best managers will find common objectives in order to avoid issues in the future. The following scenarios illustrate the importance of coherence in the two functions.

When it comes to strategy, business managers and IT managers must work together. It is not enough to have one goal, because it would not allow the other to achieve its goals. While both roles are important, the relationship between IT and business management must be clearly defined. Using the same terminology is key to achieving the desired outcome. If the objectives are different, the management processes will be less effective and the results will be less effective.
