Expectations in Dating – 3 Tips to Avoid Disappointment


While dating, both partners will have certain expectations in a relationship. This is only natural as it reflects on our own desires and goals and our need to fulfill them for our own well-being and happiness. The important thing to keep in mind is that the expectations that you and your partner have for the relationship can often be very different. The good news is that there are some things you can do to help avoid the disappointment involved in not having your expectations met by your partner.

Be Realistic

Unrealistic expectations in a relationship can be very detrimental to its growth. If, for example, you expect your partner to spend every waking second of their lives with you, then the disappointment will be yours when your partner’s career or other obligations seemingly get higher priority than yourself. You will likely begin to feel neglected and, therefore, disappointed and unhappy.

Your partner has his or her own interests, family and friends, and responsibilities to tend to. Give them space to do so. Avoid being too demanding of your partner’s time simply because you expect a higher level of attention in order to feel appreciated or loved.

Communicate With Your Partner


Communication is vital in all aspects of a healthy relationship. This holds true for expectations as well. Talk with your partner about your needs and desires, and listen to theirs equally. Many of your expectations in a relationship may already be shared by your partner. By communicating with them, your partner can then have a better understanding of what you want out of the relationship, and you can too.

Don’t Push Too Hard

When things are going well, at least in your eyes, and you find yourself happy with your partner overall, you may feel compelled to start moving things along more quickly. However, you must be careful and avoid pushing your partner to take the relationship to the next level before he or she is ready to do so. Instead, try to concentrate on pacing yourself, and let the natural flow of things take place. Any actions you take to try and force the relationship to progress can potentially do more harm than good. Exercise a degree of patience, and see how things go before doing anything that could make your partner feel pressured.

Positive expectations in a relationship, such as the anticipation of having a good date, can bring excitement to your relationship and make it more rewarding for both you and your partner. On the other hand, expecting more from your partner than he or she is either willing or capable of giving can spell the beginning of the end. Be realistic, communicate with your partner, and never push too hard in trying to get what you want from your relationship.
