How To View And Change My IP Address
An IP address is a kind of “identity card” of a computer that identifies it on the Internet. Many users want to view and change their IP address in order to maintain their anonymity. The need to change the IP address can also be caused by a very real technical reason – a conflict of IP addresses. Here are some solutions for how to update your current IP addresses.
What is an IP address
An IP address is a series of numbers that represent the address of your computer on the network. Typically, a computer connected to the Internet has at least two IP addresses: local and external.
The local IP address used on the internal network to connect to the router is also called the private IP address; it can be changed, if necessary, in the router settings or through the Windows Control Panel .
An external or public IP address is the address that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has assigned to your router and under which all computers on your local network appear. Depending on your ISP, it can be fixed (constant or static IP address) or dynamic (periodically updated IP address).
How to find the local IP address
On Windows 10
In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd and press Enter:
This will launch the Command Prompt application . Enter ipconfig in it and press Enter again.
If you are connected via Wi-Fi, take a look at the Wireless LAN Adapter section and in particular where it says IPv4 Address : This is the local IP address of your PC.
On Windows 8
Press the Windows key to open the Start screen. Type cmd in the search bar and press Enter .
Follow steps 2 and 3 of the previous section ( Windows 10 ).
On Windows 7
Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner, type cmd in the search bar and launch the application.
Follow steps 2 and 3 of the section related to Windows 10 .
How to find my external IP address
It’s that simple! Your public IP address :
You can also check it using special services such as WhatIsMyIP .
Changing the local IP address manually

Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > Network Connections . Windows will then display a list of existing connections ( Ethernet or Wi-Fi ). Right-click the required connection and select Properties from the context menu. Navigate to Connection Specifications > Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) and then click Properties again :
Select the Use the following IP address option (instead of the Obtain default IP address option ). Then register the desired IP address (within the range of valid IP addresses), the subnet mask (you need to know the network to assign an IP address that is not in use by another machine), as well as the default gateway and correct DNS server addresses:
Click Apply > OK .
Updating the IP address in the modem settings
You can use the command line to change your IP address (for most ISPs).
To launch Command Prompt, press the Windows and R keys at the same time (or click Start > Run ) and type
… In the line enter the command
ipconfig / flushdns
to flush the DNS cache. Then enter
ipconfig / release
to view the current IP address. Finally, enter
ipconfig / renew
to update the IP address.
Windows will assign a new random IP for each of the devices connected to the router (within the valid IP range).
If the IP address does not change, this means that your ISP has a fixed IP address, not dynamic IP addresses. Even so, there are some solutions.
Change public IP address
ISPs rarely allow their public IP address to be changed, except for those using dynamic IP addresses that are allocated for a limited time.
This IP address changes automatically and periodically.
However, there is software for using a proxy network , that is, machines whose IP address will take up the connection time. Thus, you can not change your IP-address , but hide it. There are several services with which you can do this:
Using proxy servers
There are many free services that act as intermediaries between your device and the page you want to visit, such as HMA or Anonymouse . The algorithm of actions is always the same: in the search bar, copy the link to the web page you want to go to, and click the corresponding button to start browsing with a “fake” IP.
Services of the VPN (virtual private network) work similarly, masking your true IP-address. They are generally faster, more reliable, and more powerful than proxy servers. Usually, these are paid services. We recommend NordVPN , ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost .
Using the Tor browser
Tor is an alternative, independent browser designed for those who are particularly concerned about their online privacy. This browser uses encryption methods that make it impossible to track your activity. You can download it for free here .
