How To Manage Subtitles On Disney Plus From All Devices

Have you decided to improve your English by watching your favorite Disney Plus series in its original language but with subtitles? An idea that is easy to implement! As you know, in fact, the main streaming platforms offer, yes, a large repertoire of translated content, but there are also absolute gems worth seeing in their original language.

How To Manage Subtitles On Disney Plus From All Devices

So I decided to offer you a tutorial on managing subtitles on Disney Plus . You will be able to activate and customize them as you like.

Available languages

Disney Plus strives to provide the best of modern materials (and not only) with dubbing and – to quote the official press release – with the support of “overlay subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing people (the SDH)» .

At the time of writing, in particular, support extends to a maximum of 16 languages (Danish, English, Spanish and Latin American Spanish, Canadian French and French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, German, Polish), of which is likely to grow as the service spreads to other countries.

How to activate

The guide you are about to read will allow you to install subtitles on Disney Plus across all devices . You will be able to walk through all the steps that I will list, both with the official mobile app and with a smart TV.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Open Disney Plus and sign in with your credentials;
  2. Start the content (TV series, movie, documentary) you want to watch with subtitles;
  3. Click (or click) on the small icon dedicated to audio and subtitle settings (located in the upper right corner);
  4. Choose the language you want to play the content in and set the subtitle language always with one tap (if you are watching Disney Plus in the app) or with one click (if you are using a browser).

Keep in mind that for mobile devices and smart TVs, as soon as you make a selection related to audio and subtitling, the settings screen will automatically close so that you can return to the full view of the selected content. On the other hand, in browsers, you’ll have to click the back arrow to return to the movie or TV show you were watching.

How to setup

On Disney Plus, you can customize the graphical aspect of subtitles. However, unlike activation, this procedure is specific for each category of devices (although, in fairness, the instructions differ very slightly). Below are the details.

Configuring from a browser

Changing the look of Disney Plus subtitles from your browser is probably the easiest and most complete way. By the way, at the moment I am writing and, unlike what is reported in the FAQ on the official Disney Plus website, according to my tests, customizing the appearance of subtitles is possible only through a browser.

I will explain how to do it:

  1. Connect to Disney Plus with your account and select the content you want to watch;
  2. When you start playing, an icon will appear at the top right , dedicated to setting up audio and subtitles, click on it;
  3. At this point, you will see a menu dedicated to editing audio (left) and subtitles (right), and you will also notice a small gear icon designed specifically for changing the style of subtitles.

Once you have access to the edit section, you will be able to act by changing:

  • Font;
  • Font color and opacity;
  • Opacity percentage of the font;
  • Font size;
  • Font outline color;
  • Outline color and opacity;
  • The percentage of opacity of the outline;
  • The color and opacity of the window.

As you can see, every time you make a change, you will be shown a preview in the top bar. If you do not like the changes made, you can restore them by scrolling down the menu and clicking on “Restore defaults “.

Personalization from Android

To change the appearance of subtitles on Android phones and tablets, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Disney Plus app and tap your avatar ;
  2. Follow the path Settings> Accessibility> Subtitle Preference> Use Subtitles;
  3. Choose the size and style you prefer.

However, at the time of this writing, as far as I understand, the decal customization process is no longer possible from Android devices (smartphones and tablets).

Setting up with Chromecast

If you are using devices like Google Chromecast or other HDMI dongles, you just need to set the subtitle settings from the phone or tablet from which you are streaming.

Personalization from iOS

On Apple devices iOS 13.0.0and above, you can set up subtitles by following these steps:

  1. Log in to Disney Plus via the app;
  2. Follow the path Settings> Accessibility> Subtitles & Captions> Style;
  3. At this stage, you just have to choose one of the existing styles or create your own (in this case, you will have to disable the “Video Exclusion” function).

If you have an iPhone or iPad with an iOS version earlier than the one above, or an Apple TV, follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in to Disney Plus ;
  2. Follow the path Settings> General> Accessibility> Subtitles & Captions> Style;
  3. Choose from the available subtitle styles or create your own.

Setting up with Roku

Changing the appearance of subtitles on Roku is very simple: go to “Settings” and go to path "Accessibility"> "Style and subtitles“. At this stage, choose the attributes that you like best.

Configuring from the console

If you are using a Sony PlayStation , go to "Settings"> "Accessibility"> "On-screen subtitles"> "Display on-screen subtitles"> "On-screen subtitles settings" and adjust them to your liking.

If you’re using Microsoft’s Xbox , do the following: Press the Xbox button on your joystick and go to Systems > Settings > Accessibility > On-ScreenSubtitles> On-Screen Subtitles. Then edit them to your liking.

Manage Subtitles On Disney Plus From Smart TV setup

When you launch any content on Disney Plus, an icon related to audio and subtitles will appear in the upper right corner . Select it and select the “Subtitle Style” option , then make the desired changes.

Set up with Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire Stick

On the home screen, go to Settings and then select Accessibility> Screen Subtitle Settings. Then customize them as you like.

How to turn them off

When you get tired of reading or you just decide to watch and listen to content in your native language, that is, without subtitles, you can simply turn off this feature.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to Disney Plus ;
  2. Start playing content ;
  3. Click (or tap) the subtitle icon ;
  4. In the “Subtitles ” section , select “Off. “;
  5. Go back to viewing content, now the subtitles will no longer be displayed.

You can reactivate this feature at any time.
